History
"Hemos sido inseparables y esperamos compartir muchos años más juntos."
Originally separated by roughly 2,400 miles, Carolina born in the small coffee town of Chinchiná, Caldas, Colombia and Eric in Queens, New York, USA. The distance grew smaller as Carolina and her family moved to Middletown, NY, which was about 20 miles from where Eric’s family was living in Highland Mills, NY. We later would walk on the same college campus, but our serendipitous story still needed time.
Our story began in 2012 when Eric began working at the same company as Carolina. Although it was not an immediate romance, Eric was persistent in getting Carolina’s attention including asking for help with a number of (fake) client account applications. For whatever reason he just could not figure out how to fax the applications… The persistence paid off and we have been together ever since. Together, we have spent the years traveling, but none more pivotal than a trip in October of 2015 to Cartagena, Colombia. Standing in the courtyard of the hotel Casa Pestagua, surrounded by the beauty of Colombia (and his girlfriend) Eric knew that this was the place he wanted to get married and the girl he wanted to be there with him at the altar. Since then, we have been inseparable and look forward to sharing many years to come together.

Originalmente separados por aproximadamente 2,400 millas, Carolina nació en el pequeño pueblo cafetero de Chinchiná, Caldas, Colombia y Eric en Queens, Nueva York, USA. La distancia se hizo más pequeña cuando Carolina y su familia se mudaron a Middletown, NY, que estaba a unas 20 millas de donde vivía la familia de Eric en Highland Mills, NY. Más tarde caminarían por el mismo campus universitario, pero nuestra fortuita historia aún necesitaba tiempo.
Nuestra historia comenzó en el 2012 cuando Eric comenzó a trabajar en la misma empresa que Carolina. Aunque no fue un romance inmediato, Eric fue persistente en llamar la atención de Carolina, incluso pidiendo ayuda con una serie de solicitudes de cuentas de clientes (falsas). Por alguna razón, simplemente no sabía usar el fax… La perseverancia dio sus frutos y hemos estado juntos desde entonces. Juntos, hemos pasado años viajando, pero ninguno más importante que un viaje en Octubre del 2015 a Cartagena, Colombia. Parado en el patio del hotel Casa Pestagua, rodeado por la belleza de Colombia (y su novia), Eric sabía que este era el lugar donde quería casarse y la chica con la que quería estar allí con él en el altar. Desde entonces, hemos sido inseparables y esperamos compartir muchos años más juntos.

There are daily non-stop flights to Cartagena (Rafael Núñez Airport) from New York (5 hours). Our favorite airline to fly is JetBlue. Please book early flights on Thursday if you plan to join us for dinner on the beach.

The average temperature in Cartagena in April for a typical day ranges from a high of 88°F (31°C) and a low of 78°F (25°C). The key to enjoying Cartagena is to explore the streets in the morning while it’s cooler, and relax by the pool in the afternoon.
We recommend lightweight, breathable, and flowy fabrics. As for shoes, the streets in the Walled City are mostly cobblestone and can be hard on the feet so bring comfortable shoes!
You need a valid passport. Some airlines will not allow you to travel unless your passport is valid 6 months post-travel **this means that your passport expiration date must be dated October 07, 2024 (or later, depending your departure date from Cartagena)**

Nope! The ‘Walled City’ is very tourist friendly, with many hotel and restaurant workers speaking some English. It may be worth taking a few minutes to bone up on your travel phrases
Colombian Pesos, or COP. The exchange rate as of writing is $1 USD = ~4000 pesos.

We recommend that you exchange money at the airport when you arrive at Cartagena or before leaving your US location. After claiming your checked luggage you will be processed through one more security check point. After the security check point, you will find a currency exchange window right before exiting the airport .If you plan to take a taxi to the hotel We advise you exchange some money prior to leaving the Cartagena airport .
ATM’s are accessible throughout the old city but are not always conveniently located. However, Credit cards are widely accepted.
We recommend double checking whether your bank charges foreign transaction fees, and letting them know you will be travelling abroad to prevent your bank from freezing your card.
Most cellphone carriers will charge you an extra fee for using your cellphone internationally. We have noticed that T-mobile customers have plans that do allow the regular use of your cellphone in Cartagena.
BUT PLEASE CALL YOUR CARRIER TO CONFIRM .
Pre-paid sim cards are available for unlocked cellphones. You will also have access to wifi at many locations including our selected hotel.
In the Old City everything is walking distance to shops, restaurants and nightlife.
If you plan on exploring outside of the walled city Taxis’ are your best option. While Uber technically works in Cartagena, there are not many drivers so it’s most convenient to jump in a cab. Show your driver the destination and agree on a rate before he starts driving.

Beaches in Cartagena are beautiful to look at from the balcony of a hotel but not so great to spend the day. ( WAYY TOO MANY VENDORS)
The best way to go about this is to buy day passes to the beach clubs. (Which we have planned) take a look under the “BEACH DAY” tab for more information
Yes! Drug Mega Express is a 5 minute walk from Sofitel, although pharmacies are abundant and easily accessible for those staying elsewhere withing the walled city.
For a more traditional mall , Centro Comercial La Serrezuela is a 3 minute walk from Sofitel. Chic shopping mall with brand-name retailers & dining in an arena-style former theater building located near the San Diego plaza.
